Maurice Sendek passes away. Let out your terrible roar & wild rumpus. I’m going to read Where the Wild Things Are to my nephew this week and I will be reading it with extra fierceness so that he carries it on to the next generation. Articles from NPR. Morning Edition Podcast. The Guardian on Sendek. Rosenbach Museum & Library Collection on Maurice Sendek. Visit today for free.
Letters of Note has a letter from Sendek’s editor to a librarian who burned In the Night Kitchen. Here is Sendek’s obituary in the NY Times and his interview with Fresh Air (NPR) in December. The wonderful thing about Maurice Sendek is that he was always humble about his art, which makes him even more of a legend. Thank you Tea & Paper for sharing these links.

i too am mourning the loss of maurice sendak. in the night kitchen was one of my son’s favorite books – thankfully we did NOT have a doctored copy and like sendak said, the character’s nakedness didn’t disturb my son. kids learn shame about their body; it’s not an inherent thing. i am shocked at the librarian who admitted to burning a copy. that should be enough of an heinous offense to have her librarian creds revoked.

I completely agree. What librarian burns books?! They’re supposed to be the saints of books. BAH! I love that you read the non-doctored copy to your child, that’s wonderful. My nephew is the kind of nakedness and so I’m going to have to get that copy to read to him.

I can’t believe that a librarian would burn a book – they should never be allowed near a library again! I really like the quote on the e-card at the end. I may have to ‘borrow’ that to post on my tumblr. Thanks for a great Newsday Tuesday and thanks for stopping by my blog earlier.

I know right – what a bad librarian. They have the golden key to books, and literacy, and she’s burning pages – it’s crazy.
Go ahead and borrow away! Share with everyone you know. I “borrowed” it too. : )
